The Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) has registered significant growth in student enrolment, with numbers rising from 12,000 to 15,000 over the past year, according to the university’s Rector, Professor Ismail Ssimbwa Gyagenda. Speaking at the 7th IUIU Alumni Dinner held on April 4, 2026, at Hotel Africana, Prof. Gyagenda said the increase reflects the institution’s continued relevance in training human resources for national development.

“With this development, we believe that IUIU continues to be a major institution that trains young people to contribute to society,” he said. The Rector attributed the growth to ongoing investments in infrastructure and academic programmes, including the completion of a science and technology facility aimed at strengthening practical training. He noted that the project was supported through government-backed financing, with the Government of Uganda guaranteeing funding that enabled its completion.

“It was not easy for us, but we managed,” he said, adding that additional structures are being planned to accommodate newly acquired equipment. “We have to build a workshop outside the main building to house the big equipment that we have received,” he explained.
